5 DO’S AND DON’TS WHEN USING HAIR EXTENSIONS

If you are thinking about trying hair extensions or are looking to pick up a few tips while maintaining your extensions, below are some basic facts you need to consider. While it is important to learn the best practices for taking care of your hair extensions and achieving the best possible outcome for natural, full-bodied, beautiful hair, the best advice we can give is to contact the professionals at Hair Evermore to avoid any frustrating issues. We have a wide variety of the highest quality hair extensions in 40+ of colors, versatile lengths, trending styles and professional hair care products that will give the complete beauty transformation to meet your needs.

1. DON’T just use any shampoo. DO use quality shampoo.

It is recommended to wait 24 to 48 hours from the application before washing your extensions. Always use a good quality shampoo and hydrating conditioner to keep your hair smooth. Specifically, look for Sulfate-Free Shampoos (like the products pictured below) to preserve the hair from drying and the color that is in your hair extension. Make sure to properly lather the hair, and avoid big sweeping motions as this can cause tangling. Knots can easily form when washing too harshly or when too much build-up occurs. What causes build-up? Dirt, sweat, over excessive hair products. We recommend you wash your hair every other day or even 2-3 times a week, but all of this depends on your daily activities. If you delay washing your hair, the natural hair oil from your scalp can seep into the tape hair adhesive and tube locks, causing slippage.

Stay away from products containing alcohol, oil or ethanol, as these ingredients will make your hair dry and could compromise the adhesive or keratin tips on your extensions.

2. DON’T brush your hair the same old way. DO take care of your extensions.

Brush your hair 2 to 3 times a day using a detangling brush but never brush when the extensions are wet. Make it a habit to brush and detangle every day! Using a detangling brush, brush in a downward motion toward the ends of your hair and gently work your way up. But be careful, over-brushing or brushing harshly can lead to breakage and split ends. This is because brushing creates friction and therefore the hair can get matted if too much friction is applied. Once you’ve brushed your hair, remember to never sleep on your extensions while they’re wet. Make sure your hair is completely dry, and gently tie it up or braid it to prevent tangling before going to bed.

3. DON’T use hair extensions that are a different color or texture from your natural hair. DO match your hair for a natural look.

Some celebrities and public figures have tried to make mismatching hair extensions trendy. However, most hair care professionals agree this is a fashion faux pas. If your natural hair is curled, don’t use straight extensions, otherwise, they will be mismatched causing your hair extensions to look fake which isn’t the look you probably want. Do match the color and style of your extensions with your natural hair because the goal is to blend your hair extensions with your real hair.

4. DON’T style your hair without protective products. DO use a heat protectant.

Before using heat tools to style, apply heat protectant on your damp extensions. Be sure to let the heat protectant sit for a while before applying heat. When applying heat, please be cautious with the use of blow dryers and curling irons near the root area where the extensions are installed. Try to stay ½” away from the application areas. Remember, excessive heat can reduce the life of your extensions.

5. DON’T go to an inexperienced stylist with your extensions. DO schedule maintenance appointments with a Hair Evermore Professional.

Trust us when we say you don’t want to go to a hair salon or stylist that is not familiar with hair extensions and know how to care for them. This can cause unwanted risks and damage to the health and longevity of your extensions. Do schedule regular maintenance appointments about every six weeks with one of our licensed stylists because you should not remove your extensions or move them up on your own. We know it seems easier to save yourself the trouble and perform this task yourself, but you may accidentally ruin the chance to re-use and re-apply the hair extensions.
