Guide: How to Choose the Correct Length of Hair Extensions

If you’re interested in purchasing best human hair extensions, congratulations! You’ve taken a major step in not only adding density, volume and thickness to your natural and real hair, but also increasing your beauty and confidence in the process.

In general, it’s a best practice not to wear hair extensions that are significantly longer than your natural hair length. We would recommend a maximum of 3’’ to 4’’ inches more than your natural hair length, but it also depends on your personal preferences.

In addition, we also recommend having your natural hair length be at least 4’’ to 5’’ inches long to help you conceal and blend the extensions into your hair. While there are hair extensions for short hair, it can look unnatural if your hair is too short, especially with clip-in hair extensions.

How to measure hair extensions

If you want to see how your hair extensions will look on your hair or determine what is the right fit, you will need to measure them. Luckily, this isn’t a complicated process as all you will need is a measuring tape.

First, measure your hair length from the top of your head to the end of the hair. Follow the same by measuring the hair extensions you’ve purchased and you will now have a good idea of the best length to add on to your hair.

For example, if your natural hair length measures at 16’’, hair extensions that measure from 18 to 20’’ will be ideal.

#16 inch hair length

If your natural hair length measures at 16’’, that means you have shoulder length hair and can use extensions to extend the length beyond that to your mid-back for example.

#18 inch hair length

If your natural hair length measures at 18’’, your hair reaches just below your shoulders. If you want your hair to extend to 18’’, however, we offer a number of human hair extensions from nail tip, tape-in, i-tip and machine weft.

#22 inch hair length

If your natural hair length measures at 22’’, your hair should reach the middle of your back. On the other hand, if you want your hair to extend to 22’’, we offer a number of human hair extensions from nail tip, tape-in, i-tip, machine weft and hand-tied weft.

#24 inch hair length

If your natural hair length measures at 24’’, your hair should reach just below the middle of your back. If you want your hair to extend to 24’’, we offer a number of hair extensions from nail tip, tape-in, i-tip, clip-in, and u-tip.

Selecting the correct length of hair extensions

As noted above, the best practice is to opt for human hair extensions that are within 3’’ to 4’’ of your natural hair. So if you want your hair to reach the middle of your back at 22’’, it is imperative that your real hair measures at 18’’ at the very least.

However, we understand that long hair extensions are a big trend now and you may want to extend the length even further. In that case, we recommend purchasing an additional pack of the hair extension so that it provides more of a natural look.
